Word Vomit

Word vomit is about how much words we can make out of 5 words
This weeks 5 words are

  • Toaster
  • Motorcycle
  • Spider
  • Fallen Tree
  • Red Pen
I was riding down a lonely street with my Motorcycle and my pet Spider. We went past a Broken Tree in the middle of a park because of the storm a few ago and it was marked with a big X on it because it was one of the ones that needed to be taken out anyways but the storm did it for them. I then went home to use my new Toaster that i had brought a few hours ago but didn’t use it because it had ot go out to get something else because i forgot to get the other thing that i needed. I let my pet spider roam around his habitat with his new Red Pen that i had brought him and i also got him a new house that can go in his habitat. My spider managed to climb his habitat and got out so he roamed around the house waiting till i get up at 5:30 am in the morning.

Making Hot Cross Buns

Yesterday, as Easter rapidly approaching, Chloe, Jaime and I baked Hot Cross Buns in Home Economics.

Ingredients

  • Whole wheat or white flour
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Butter
  • Honey
  • Cinnamon
  • Raisins
  • Milk
Frosting ingredients
  • Icing sugar
  • Milk
  • Vanilla essence
The method consisted of mixing our dry ingredients together in a bowl, then incorporating the butter in until it resembled coarse breadcrumbs.
Next came the honey, cinnamon and raisins, which we had to toss slightly, for some flavour and texture to our buns.
The next step is to make a well in the middle of the bowl. Then you add the entirety of the milk at once, using a fork to stir it around quickly. The dough should pull away and look like a ball.
The final step is to divide the ball into smaller, even balls, but Jaime, Chloe and I divided ours into three big ones.

To bake the buns, place the balls atop a baking sheet. Use a knife to cut a deep cross through the top of each ball.
Bake the buns at 200 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
Ours took approximately 14 minutes to bake.

To make the icing, in a bowl we mixed icing sugar, a small amount of milk, and a few drops of vanilla essence. Remember to be careful! The icing consistency must be thick but not runny. If you pull it up with a spoon it should run down, but not fall off the spoon. I think we nailed our icing because it delicious and a perfect consistency without needing an extra amount of any ingredients.

Once the buns are finished baking, leave them to cool for just a few minutes if time allows. We actually had a lot of spare time so we left them for about two minutes to allow the bread to set and cool. If we were to put the icing on immediately, it would have melted down due to the high temperature of the buns.

Now it is time to ice the hot cross buns! Using a spoon, we drizzled the icing on the buns using our cross as a guideline. It was difficult to get a perfect cross but we definitely could have done worse.

We believe we had a really good practical lesson. Our buns were cooked perfectly on the inside - light and fluffy, and firm on the outside.
They tasted delicious, I really liked how the cinnamon, honey and salt added flavour, as well as how the raisins added texture.

My favourite part of the process was the icing, it had a really good consistency and sweet taste. It was also fun to drizzle it on top of the bun.

Pizza Scroll

Jay, Jaime, Chloe and I created Pizza scrolls yesterday in Home Economics.
We were proud of how good it tasted because it was amazing because we made it well

Ingredients
  • Flour
  • Butter
  • Milk
  • Salt
  • Baking powder
  • Onion
  • Ham/bacon
  • Cheese
  • Tomato puree
  • Herbs

Method
  • First of all we had to cut up the butter into small cubes and incorporate that into the flour with our fingertips.
  • We had to cut the rind of the bacon before slicing it into small pieces.
  • Then we added milk to our flour and butter bowl and used a butter knife to mix it into a dough.
  • The dough was then kneaded - it is important not to over knead it as the dough can become tough and difficult to roll out.
  • While we did that, we fried the bacon and onion in a frying pan. We used butter, but you can also substitute it for oil or cooking spray.
  • We also grated some cheese.
  • We rolled out the dough with a rolling pin. We had to ensure it was thin and even, and shaped like a large rectangle.
  • Then we spread tomato puree, sprinkled some herbs and grated cheese, and topped it off with the fried bacon and onion on the dough.
  • After that we rolled the dough up into a cylinder shape and used a knife to cut it into small rolls about an inch wide.
  • It was then baked for about ten minutes, until they were brown at the top and were cooked on the inside. We learned that even if they were a little bit doughy on the inside, after we let them sit the doughiness would subside.
